Death at La Fenice
Guido Brunetti is the fictitious commissario of police in Venice Italy. He's a capable criminal investigator as well as a good family man, and he is the hero of police mysteries set in the unique City of Venice. The prolific author, Donna Leon, lived in Venice for more than 30 years and seems to know every alley and vaporetto stop, but she is a native of New Jersey. Her writing is straightforward. Violence is kept to a minimum. Start with Death at La Fenice (1992), or fast forward to The Waters of Eternal Youth (2016). Or dig in to any of her 26 Guido Brunetti novels.
