U.S. Department of Transportation Awards Contract to Mokulele Airlines
The U.S. Department of Transportation has awrded a contract to Mokulele Airlines to provide Essential Air Service (EAS) to Imperial County for the four-year period from May 1, 2018 through April 30, 2022. Mokulele Airlines will continue to provide 24 nonstop round trips per week to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), using 9-seat Cessna Grand Caravan 208-B or 208-EX aircraft.
Based in Kona, Hawaii, Mokulele Airlines was founded in 1994 as an inter-island charter and sightseeing airline with a single plane. The airline expanded into California when it began providing EAS to Imperial County in 2016.
"Essential Air Service is critical to the residents of Imperial County," says District 5 Supervisor and Board Chairman Ray Castillo. "Mokulele was supported by Imperial County through the bid process because of their proven record of excellent service with roundtrip flights to LAX; they are a valued member of our community."
Mokulele was one of four airlines submitting proposals for the contract. While fulfilling the contract for Imperial County, over the past 12 months, Mokulele Airlines has flown 2,469 flights with a total of 11,420 passengers from Imperial County Airport.
