Department Overview

Text Box: Program funding is supported by federal, state and county tax dollars. The department has six major divisions staffed by a total of 420 employees.

Expanded Services:  The Department of Social Services plans to expand its services the northern section of the county.  The Department has entered into negotiations with the building owner of the Brawley One-Stop Center.  Plans for the remodeling of the building have been completed with the intention to provide a full spectrum of social services through that location.  Board of Supervisor approval for the expansion will be requested for a possible completion of the project by late 2009.

Public Assistance: Eligibility is determined for cash assistance (CalWORKs, Foster Care, Aid to Adoptions, Kinship Guardianship Assistance Payment, Cash Assistance Program to Immigrants, General Assistance), Food Stamps, Medi-Cal and County Medical Services Program under applicable federal and state laws.

 

 

Administrative Services: Provides staff development services to public assistance staff, represents the department in state administrative and county hearings on public assistance program issues.

CalWORKs Welfare-to-Work: Helps prepare CalWORKs recipients for jobs and coordinates programs to assist individuals towards self-sufficiency within prescribed time limits under welfare reform.

 

 

Children and Family Services: Provides protective and supportive services for children and families. Placement services are provided to children who are abused, exploited or neglected.

Adult Services: Provides protective and in-home supportive services to needy elderly or disabled adults.

 

 

Administrative Support Services: Provides operational support to the department. This includes personnel services, fiscal services and other support services, such as clerical support and systems technical support.
